After many years, the copyright dispute over popular song "Happy Birthday to You" is almost over.

According to a court filing on the 8th February, music publisher Warner/Chappell will pay $14 million to end a lawsuit challenging its hold on "Happy Birthday to You." The settlement also specifies that once the settlement is approved by the court, the song will be in the public domain.

An agreement to have a judge declare the song in the public domain is an unusual and interesting outcome. The settlement money from Warner/Chappell will be distributed among those who paid licensing fees for the song back to 1949.
